The French Bac Diploma
The French Baccalaureate is a diploma accepted by universities worldwide. However, special requirements may apply for some universities (especially in Switzerland), possibly requiring a Grade Point Average equal to, or above 12/20.
Students choose between three different “series”, or programmes of study, and specialized options according to their interests, abilities and ambitions. Each of the three series covers a demanding syllabus, and each requires a mastery of written and spoken French as well the ability to analyse, organize and synthesize. There are no eliminatory marks.
Courses for all three “series” of the French Baccalaureate are offered at Collège Champittet.
Literary Series “L”
This course is based on literature, philosophy and foreign languages and is aimed at those students who plan to follow university careers either in Law, Literature or Languages. A modern language should be chosen as a ‘speciality’.
Economic and Social Series “ES”
Mainly for future university students in Economics and Law, the course offers a good balance between the social sciences, languages and mathematics.
Students wanting to attend business schools or planning to study Economics at university, are recommended to choose Mathematics as a speciality.
If mathematics are not chosen as a specialty, then students must pass an oral exam in one of the two modern languages that are studied.
Scientific Series “S”
This course is heavily focused on the study of Science and suitable for students with a strong background in Mathematics and Physical Science.
Success in this series allows entry into the best science and medical faculties. It is also strongly recommended for students who wish to enter top rated business schools. Among the three “series”, this program is considered as being the most rigorous.
One of the three science courses must be chosen as a ‘speciality’, and will be weighted by a factor of two at the compulsory written exam which will also includes an additional question.
